What is the best way to install a virtual machine to maximize the performance from it? Will putting it on an SSD help? Any tips would be appreciated. I'm looking to install it to get some old Windows games to run.

Yes, an SSD will help. What does your host machine look like?

Intel i5 3570K @ 4.2ghz
CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO+ CPU cooler
8GB PC1600 RAM
3GB HIS IceQ Turbo 7950
Seasonic Bronze 580W PSU
ASRock Z77 Extreme3 motherboard

If adding RAM will help I'm open to that. I'm sure I can add another 2x4gb.

What OS are you intending to run?

More RAM is a very cheap way to boost your VM performance. They like to live in the RAM, and it will save some write cycles on your SSD. The SSD will make it much faster to hibernate your VM, if you do that.

Great question. Do you think a Windows 95/98 compatible game will run well on Windows XP? If so i'd like to run XP. Otherwise i'll probably have to run 98.

XP should run 95/98 games just fine, provided they are actual windows games and not DOS. If they're DOS, I'd suggest trying DOSBox first before running a VM

That being said, your computer should emulate XP, 98 or 95 just fine, in the state it is currently in. VMware has a free VM environment that works just perfectly well.

I was all excited when I thought I was going to get to talk about running old Windows games on a Linux machine...but now I see that isn't the discussion.

My computer should emulate XP just fine? Meaning I can flip a setting on it? Oh I forgot to mention Win 7 64 home.

Is there something I need to download or were you referring to my machine running VM no problem? Any links to VM downloads?

Windows 7 can run in compatibility mode for some XP programs, but it definitely doesn't go further back than that. What I meant is that your computer's hardware will have no problem running a virtual machine.

To run a VM, you need an environment and an installation. The environment can be found here . The installation, well that's entirely up to you.

(Apparently I can't find VMware's free solution any more. VirtualBox will serve your needs.)

I like to use VMWare Player, which is the free-for-personal-use version of VMWare Workstation. Other folks prefer VirtualBox, which is fine too, but I find it to be a bit more fiddly to get working.

When you run a virtual machine, you will assign to the virtual machine a portion of the RAM in your "real" machine to use. The amount of memory you assign depends on what OS you are running and what you're doing. I use a Windows 7 32-bit Japanese VM to run some imported games, and I've assigned it 2GB out of the 8GB in my system, which works just fine. VMWare will recommend an amount of RAM to assign once you tell it what OS you are virtualizing.

It doesn't take much to virtualize a WinXP machine. The recommended system requirements for XP calls for only 128MB, so it wouldn't worry about it.

I run my VMs off a quick hard drive (WD Black) and it's fast enough for me. I boot my main OS from an SSD but I've never bothered running the VMs from it.

The easiest way to set up a new VM is if you have either an install CD or an .iso file of the install CD available. VMWare in particular will recognise the OS you're trying to use and configure itself accordingly.

My system specs:

i5 3570

8GB RAM

GeForce GTX 560Ti

Samsung 830 SSD (128GB)

WD Black HDD (2TB)
